My Journey to Being Fit & Fabulous

Hi Beautiful People,

Let me start by saying this is probably one of the most difficult Blogs I've had to write thus far, probably because I'm forced to be very transparent about this topic. Some of my "fab followers" know that I've struggled to loose weight because I've written about it enough times in my Blog for you to know that "it hasn't happened yet", SMH. But recently, within the past few months I've been exposed to some really positive women who I truly believe are in my life for a reason.

Lets start off with my girl Taunya of Taunya Taylor Fitness. She is a Health and Fitness Coach and I've known her for approximately 8 years. For as long as I've known her she's always been fit and fabulous...even before & after having two children. Taunya has ALWAYS been supportive of me and is constantly giving me advice and ideas on how to eat healthier and examples on how to exercise properly. She never judges me and she's constantly motivating me to change my lifestyle.

Next up is Monisha at Moya Body Care in the City of Torrance and she believes in Alternative and Holistic Health. I met her through a coupon I purchased from Living Social Deals. From our initial meeting she was so positive and supportive that I couldn't help but to realize that she only wants what's best for me. She shows genuine interest in my health and wants me to Live My Best Life. Monisha has introduced me to the benefits of Colon Hydrotherapy and has educated me on a variety of supplements by Dr. Shulze's that I can purchase that will help my body function at its best.

Last but certainly not least...is Nikole Seals. She is a trained Holistic Nutritional Counselor that Taunya referred me to and she is working with me in adjusting my "atrocious eating habits" (that's our big word for the day, lol). I've received nothing but positive and supportive information from her and as a result I am WAY more conscious of what I eat and how the decisions I make will effect me in the long run. Who knew that eating fast food all the time, working the night shift and NOT drinking water could do so much damage to the body. It wasn't until my body started talking to me (in more ways than one) that I consciously had to start making better decisions on what I was putting into my body daily. I'm so grateful to have Nikole's abundance of knowledge and support to guide me so that I can get back on the right track.

You know how they say people have to hit rock bottom before they are motivated to make a change in their life. Well I think this applies to all people in all aspects of our lives.

My rock bottom moment - One evening I went shopping for an outfit and I took several pieces of clothing into the dressing room with me and I could barely fit into any of them. I wondered to myself - How did this happen? When did this happen? Why did this happen? I was so disappointed in myself and staring into that mirror made me realize that MY very bad eating habits is what got me to where I am now. Although I knew I needed to loose weight I also knew it wasn't going to happen over night. In the meantime, I've figured out how to "camouflage" what I'm working with. As a result, I'm self-conscious about what I wear, what articles of clothing I choose for my figure and what compliments my body type.

Well...I'M OVER IT NOW! I don't like how I look and I want to be able to go shopping and not have any problem getting into the clothes I try on. Now don't get me wrong I don't want to be a size 2 (no offense to the people who are), But I LOVE my curves, I just need to make them smaller and toned. I want muscle NOT fat! The Struggle is Real...
So now I'm on a mission. I'm not looking at a scale or doing any measurements. I'm just going to change my eating habits, start exercising again and PRAY, LOL. Because I'm going to need all the help I can get.

Now I do have a few hurdles to overcome - I have to get my digestive system back on track and I have absolutely no energy in the morning. But Nikole has a health and wellness plan laid out for me so I have to demonstrate some "will power" and "restraint" and "push myself" in order to accomplish my goals. There will be times when my work schedule will sometimes dictate my day, however I'm not going to let this stop me! My GOAL is to stop making excuses and FIND A WAY! I also have to re-educate myself on what the definition of HEALTHY is and PREPARE all my food in advance.

Now I'm not perfect and I am admitting now that there are going to be some times when I slip up and indulge. But hopefully as time goes by I will learn to be more consistent with healthy and less prone to slip ups.
The purpose of this Blog is for you guys to go on this journey with me to witness my transformation and hopefully inspire others to go out and accomplish their goals.
In addition, I NEED you guys to hold me ACCOUNTABLE!

My Motivation right now - I have two trips coming up - Aruba in May and The Essence Festival in July. It is MANDATORY that I be comfortable in my skin by then!!

My short term goal is to loose at least 20 pounds by May 20th right before my Aruba Trip!
I have exactly 3 months to meet this goal, NO EXCUSES!

Now here comes the hard part!! I have to show you a BEFORE picture of me. I went back and forth with myself several times on whether or not I wanted to post this picture. Ultimately I knew it would help motivate me stick to my goal.

Well here goes...This is a picture of me in a fitted dress (in all my glory, Lol). I do not wear fitted dresses for this exact reason!!

In May I will post a 2nd picture with me in this same dress and we will watch the weight disappear!

This Blog Entry was Nikole's GREAT idea and she believes that if I put myself out there she knows that I won't want to let my readers down. I have a reputation to uphold...I AM SingleNFabulous but now I want to be FitNFabulous too!

P.S. Maybe somewhere along this journey I will meet my Fit & Fine Husband, LOL. Hey.....this is my dream...don't judge me!

Let the FitNFabulous Journey begin...

Ladies Night Out - Part II

Hi Beautiful People,

Going out with the girls was a great way to start off 2014. We were 12 deep this time and met up at the "#1hostess" house - Nicole. There were several women attending this event tonight who were "Ladies Night Out" virgins so we had to give then a heads up on what to expect. Everyone was really cool and ready to go out and have a good time.

Nicole provided light snacks for us - chips, guacamole and salsa and of course Alcohol. As usual, my ass was not prepared and hadn't ate any food prior to arriving at 6:30pm. I attempted to stop to pick up some fast food but I was running late (as usual) and every drive through line was packed because it was dinner time, so needless to say, my ass was starving. Thank goodness Nicole has a child because she always has the best variety of snacks I can choose from. Unfortunately, I missed out on the day she cooked (sad face) so snacks were my best friend. Of course, I made the BAD decision to have an alcoholic beverage ANYWAY (I knew I shouldn't have) as it ended up sitting at the bottom of my empty stomach most of the night. No bueno!

We called our favorite form of transportation - Uber - to give us a ride in 2 SUV trucks to drop us off at the Metro station in Culver City and we took 3 trains to Pasadena for dinner and music.
Sidebar - when we were riding in the SUV I realized I didn't grab my phone or a jacket from the car! My heart sank! Right at this moment in time I realized how much I depended on my phone!!!?? I was so sick. Every time I wanted to take a picture, google something or check-in on Facebook...I couldn't. I had to re-adjust real quick or I was not going to have a good time. I told all the ladies to take lots of pictures because I'm going to use them for the Blog. Of course they were so supportive and all agreed and I began to relax.

The train ride was fun except for that unexpected FALL...What had happened was...one of the ladies was trying to move from her seat to allow smaller children to sit down and as she got up the train started moving. The children were safely in their seat but she didn't quite make it to the next seat. But it was the smoothest fall to the floor I have ever seen, LOL. She kind of just leaned into it and made it look graceful. Another woman ended up helping her up and she got to her seat safe and sound. She did It for the Babies!!! LOL.

We had a "Meeting in the Ladies Room" at Union Station because we didn't need anymore "near misses" like last time (smile) But in case we did have one I was ready with my blue printed cape that opened up real wide in case I needed to provide some form of coverage for privacy (wink).

On to the next train and we arrived in Pasadena just in time to request a table for 12 at Mi Piace Italian Kitchen & Bakery. We relaxed in their bar and lounge area and mingled with a casual crowd of people already there enjoying a cocktail. Some of the ladies met a couple of cute white boys who were complete gentlemen and let the ladies sit with them - one happened to be a lawyer. Hello! It just goes to show you...we gotta get out more and step outside of our comfort zone! Unfortunately, no one made a connection.

After one round of drinks we were seated and commenced to order. I had lasagna and a house salad...it was interesting. The dining room was full of chatter as all of us shared our occupations, what's going on in our lives and the inevitable question for some us...why are we having difficulty meeting a man. Our girl Abike, offered a few of us some good advice. Remain open to dating, what you might think is "your type" may not be your type (I never thought of this one), pay attention to the signs a man could be trying to get your attention and give a guy a chance. Although you might think that he is not "the one" his presence in your life could be preparing you for "the one" who is coming in the future. Lastly, SELF REFLECT and try to decipher why men aren't approaching you (this one was specifically directed to me). So it looks like I have some soul searching to do. Male friends have told me, in the past, that I can be "intimidating" but I have no idea where that comes from...I'm constantly smiling, laughing and goofing around...You would think that this type of behavior would make me approachable. I can be reserved at times but thats only when I'm not familiar with the people or in a new surrounding but I warm up after awhile. Looks like I'm going to have to be aware of what I could be doing to give off this vibe. A little Self Improvement never hurts.

Dinner concluded and we moved on to Bar Celona Modern Spanish Tapas Bar for more drinks and dancing. We took over a small area that would fit all 12 of us and proceeded to show them how we get down, because "We Like To Partaaaaay!" Of course you always have one or two fools that want to come join the party. They either "old" (somebodies daddy) or "special" (drunk off they ass). And unfortunately we had to deal with both. The old guy wasn't too bad but the brotha who came over trying to dance in the middle of the floor made himself look a fool (because he really couldn't dance) and then had the nerve to get mad at us! The shit you have to deal with on Ladies Night Out. Unfortunately, I wasn't feeling good. I don't know if it was the food or the alcohol I had earlier but I wasn't able to dip it low like the rest of the girls so I had to sit back and relax. Overall, I think we all had a good time. Ladies Night Out is ALWAYS Fun!

Thank goodness for Uber because we had to go through a DUI Check Point on the way home and we was all good and tipsy and the Officers knew it! Lol Thankfully we all got home in one piece.

Thank you Karen for the Pictures!!!
This Blog would be boring without evidence of OUR shenanigans!!
Nicole had some good pictures too posted on her Flipagram!!

The Rest of My Weekend:
Superbowl Sunday I went out with my girl Timika to Mr. Pockets Sports Bar in Manhattan Beach. Nice spot but boring people. By half time we were on to our next destination at Bugatta off Melrose in Los Angeles. That was a pretty cool spot with my type of crowd but that was a bust too...I didn't spot any potential candidates!

Sadly I didn't make any connections during these Outings...hence,

Your Guide to Essence Music Festival 2014 - Single and Ready to Mingle!

<a href="http://www.bloglovin.com/blog/2570011/?claim=bc89dxdsjb8">Follow my blog with Bloglovin</a>

Attention SingleNFab Followers you can now follow me on Bloglovin' and get Alerts to your email every time I post a new Adventure!!

Hey Beautiful People,

This is the first Blog of 2014 and it came about from a casual conversation I was having with a friend on facebook (Thanks Amanda). She mentioned that she planned on going to the Essence Music Festival this year and this would be her first time going! That conversation gave me the idea to write this "How To Guide" on what to expect when attending the Essence Festival.

Coincidently, this is not the first time that friends have asked for my help on preparing to go to the Essence Festival. I've been telling all my friends for years that they need to go at least one time!

Now I'm no Expert, so of course, I had to recruit some friends of mines to give their suggestions on how to prepare for the 2014 Essence Festival. With that being said...Let me formally introduce you to -

"The Newbie" (aka Timika),
"The Frequent Flyer" (Me) and
"The Veterans" (aka Nikki, Abike and Angela).

Last year it was Timika's first time going to the Essence Festival, so pay attention! This is

The Essence Festival from the "Newbie" perspective.....

Where does one begin...... From the moment we exited the plane the excitement began. Spending dollars in the Wheel of Fortune slots machines, taking pictures in front of abstract art, spotting celebrities (Chef Roble and Mary Mary) at the airport  and  getting on a  Minibus filled with other excited festival goers.  My immediate impression was Wow there are a lot of black people here.  Nice black people!  We were so nice towards one another it was overwhelming.  Everyone spoke, complimented each other on their hairstyles, clothing, etc. Once settled into our hotel room we began exploring the city.  Although my travel companion (Sheda) informed me that we would be doing a lot of walking and to bring appropriate shoes, I did not heed the warning. I implore my fashionistas to find cute shoes that are suitable for a lot, tons, miles, of walking.  Transportation in the city is limited as it is so much traffic that it takes hours to go one mile so walking is the most effective mode of transportation.  So again shoes that are comfy will be your best bet.... Remember, women judge each other...MEN could care less if you have on Louboutin or Pumas.  For Essence go with the Pumas!  Trust me there are SO MANY MEN that you will have tons to choose from.  If  a man  is sweating you about your shoes move on to the next and there will be a next and next..Now to the Men...
I had never seen so many beautiful black men in one place!! Black men who purchase meals and drink.  A beautiful woman will be spoiled in New Orleans.   Black men are in abundance but there are other nationalities there that love black women, too.  Everywhere you turn there are opportunities to mingle!
Concerts and the Convention Center

We made the mistake of not buying tickets to all of the concerts.  Despite the sound in the Superdome being horrible it gives you something cool to do each night.  The majority of the cool people that you would want to hang out with are at the concerts. In addition, if you plan on going to any White Parties get your ticket early! It wasn't that fun but there was tons of people and you wont want to miss it. On to The Convention Center ...it was CROWDED.  I'm sure there are people that love the convention center experience however that was not me. One day in the convention center was enough for me, however I did want to go on Sunday morning but um...... I overslept.  I guess all that Saturday night partying had me out of commission!

THANK YOU Timika for contributing to the Blog!

Now if Timika's story has successfully convinced you to go...like I think it has... It's my turn to tell you what you should do next!

"The Frequent Flyer" - I've been going to the Essence Festival for the past few years now and although I lost count on how many times I make it a point to go EVERY OTHER year, so I don't get tired of going. But this year I am making an exception. There is no way in the world I'm missing out on Prince performing at their 20 Year Anniversary Party!

Here's what I typically do in preparation for "Heaven on Earth" (wink) -

1)    Your first priority is to Book your hotel room ASAP. Preferably Thursday through Monday. Try not to wait until the last minute because then you might get stuck with the "leftovers" or may not get a room at all. Try to stay in the French Quarters on Canal street at one of the major hotels (The Courtyard Marriott, The Sheraton, Astor Crowne Plaza, etc.) If you can't get a room there then try to stay somewhere in the close vicinity by Harrah's Casino or The Convention Center. If all else fails try a hotel on Bourbon street. It's going to be a little noisy (depending on your room location) and more expensive because despite the "ratchetness" that takes place on that street, they actually have some nice hotels. Please note - Bourbon Street can get dirty, ratchet and stinky because people are out there every night partying, drinking and littering so take heed (you've been warned).
**Be prepared to pay a deposit amount when you make the reservation (1st night room and tax, sometimes 2 nights depending on how bougie the hotel is, LOL). You then have time to pay off the balance at your leisure right up to June before you go. But make sure you read the fine print...Every hotel has their own requirements!!

2)    As far as roommates it's based solely on your preference. I like to be comfortable when I'm out of town so I have from 1-2 people in the same room. 2 queen beds for me and my rookie (Timi) and of course (it goes without saying) that I will share a bed with my twin sister if she ever decides to crash the party at the last minute (she's always working...gotta make that money). It's not like we are going to be cooped up in the hotel that long anyway! If you are asleep in New Orleans then you AIN'T havin FUN, Lol. Take a shower, a power nap and get your ass right back out there! Now my own personal opinion is to strongly discourage big groups unless everyone already knows each other very well and have traveled together in the past (i.e. The Veterans, who you will meet in a moment). Be careful...You may go out there as friends, then fall out over some stupid shit when you get there and come back as enemies, Bwhahahahahhaha. Nobody wants that!

3)    Sign up for Airfare Alerts with your favorite airlines. Sometimes you can catch a good deal online. I got really lucky last year and paid a good price for my flight because I received an Alert "right on time" (code for - Right when I got paid, LOL).

4)    Then sign up for the Essence Festival Newsletter on essence.com to get the latest information about the Artist Line-Up for that weekend. The Super Dome concert arena is enormous! However you need to be mindful of which artist is performing on which day so you know which concert dates to buy. Now this is where Timika and I agree to disagree. I do not recommend you buy tickets to all 3 concerts because you then have to commit yourself to go every night. That's a lot of money and it can become time consuming. There are other events going on at night you just have to make some new friends and find out "where the party at"! Now, this year I just may have to go to ALL three concerts because PRINCE is going to be there and I KNOW the Artist Line-Up EVERY NIGHT is going to be RIDICULOUS!! I am forewarning everyone that you must have "comfortable flat shoes" ready because you are going to be doing a lot of walking each night! And make sure you eat at the Superdome or hit up a food cart afterwards because most of the restaurants will be closed by the time you get out.

5)    Keep your eyes and ears open for the "Celebrity" hosted parties, ALL White Party's, Party Boat cruises, etc... I can't guarantee that all the parties are going to be "poppin" but sometimes you have to just go with it and try it out, It just might be "off the hook". The one we went to Kevin Hart came through to party with us!

6)    It's Hot as Hell out there - so dress cute but cool and always be ready for that unexpected rain shower!

Last but Not Least "The Veterans" Perspective...

Nikki and her girls were going to the Essence Festival before I even knew there was an Essence Festival, LOL. Her crew was deep and these women proudly represent the "Infinite Journey Book Club". Although they haven't been in a couple of years when they were going they went EVERY year and brought New Orleans to its Knees...I'm so mad that I was never able to go at the same time they were out there partying. But all that will end this year as The Essence Festival is celebrating their 20th Anniversary and IJBC will be there in Full Effect! This trip is definitely going to be laced with Shenanigans! So I strongly suggest you make arrangements to attend.

Here's what the Ladies of IJBC had to say...

Be prepared to walk as it is very difficult to get a cab during this particular weekend. Be smart and use your common sense. Don't bring the designer bag that's too big. We recommend you carry a small purse, fanny pack, backpack or cross body bag. Carry small bills and be aware of thieves! Plan on spending approximately $100 to $200 a day (eating, drinking and partying). Most importantly do not walk around New Orleans at night by yourself, always have someone with you! You can never be too careful. Dress your age and wear what compliments your figure. Spanxs are your friend, LOL. Make up is optional (unless you really need it). Bring the basics - light foundation, eye shadow, mascara, lipstick and blush. It's HOT AS HELL out there and your makeup will come off when you are partying at Razzoo's! Ladies please have your Hair Whipped - suggested hairstyles: weave, up do, ponytail, braids, kinky twists, afro puffs, whatever, etc. There is someone for everyone! Take advantage of the Amenities in your hotel. Bring a bathing suit so you can sit by the pool and have a cocktail. We discourage any shopping at the malls because they are either "high end expensive" or "low end" and don't have a good selection. Save your money and try and win some at Harrah's Casino instead. Bring everything you need and know that CVS is on the corner if you forget anything. We are telling you now to bring a compact size umbrella or a pancho that fits in your purse because there are ALWAYS unexpected rain showers! Do some research and find out what there is to do in New Orleans. For example, take a Trolley car or riverboat ride, visit some historical places, try out different restaurants as there is always a "happy hour" going on somewhere. We highly recommend you eat at Deanie's in the French Quarter and have one of their Hurricane's. You should also make sure you go to Pat O'Brien's and order a Hurricane there too! Now The Convention Center is always packed with vendors, celebrity guests and freebies. Your hotel concierge should be able to give you a list of scheduled events you can attend so you can plan your weekend accordingly. Most importantly, pace yourself! New Orleans isn't going anywhere. Long gone are the days where we use to drink ourselves under the table. If you need to take a nap then go to the room, refuel and be prepared to...keep the party going...later on that night! If you get hungry at 2am you can always stop at the local Popeye's where the lines are long, the workers are rude but the chicken is good, LOL. Also, don't forget to make time to go to Cafe Du Mon for the beignets. Eat them fresh because they are Delicious!

THANK YOU

Ladies Night Out

Hey Beautiful People,

Friday Night Out with the Ladies was something I have been looking forward to All Week! Somewhere in my busy schedule I managed to get my hair done on Friday evening but as the day came to a close I realized I was tired and as a result I began debating with myself on whether or not I wanted to go out Friday night. On any other Friday I would have been at home with a Redbox movie and takeout food. So why now the hesitation? Other than me not wanting to put the effort into "getting cute", I have come to recognize that I have my own issues with not having control over events that I have not assisted in planning. So I almost talked myself out of going because I wasn't sure how it would turn out. But I had to "check myself" and accept that everything isn’t going to be perfect and told myself to just go out, have a good time and roll with it. Sidebar - I should have known that anything planned by the Infinite Journey Book Club Ladies and/or Honorary Members would be an Adventure in itself and it was inevitable that I would have FUN!

So I went home, freshened up and headed to LA. We all met up at the hostess house for drinks around 6:30/7pm to get the party started!  But because it was so early half of us hadn’t ate dinner yet. Any lunch I ate was no longer in my system and drinking alcohol with no food was not an option for me. I know my alcohol tolerance level very well and I know that if I drink alcohol on an empty stomach it's not going to be pretty. So I tried to opt out of the pre-drinks...but the girls weren’t having it. The hostess supplied me with some much needed snacks - a rice cake topped with peanut butter and some cheez-its crackers, Lol. Hey don't judge me I was very appreciative of these snacks...only then was I able to fill up my red cup with some Seagrams Pineapple Twisted Gin which turned out to be Delicious! But I had to pass on the tequila floaters, I would have been f*c%d up before we even left the house, Lmao.

Please Note – I had one cup of alcohol. Me and one other person made sure we stopped at the bathroom before we left the house. We knew we were going to be on the Metro for at least 2 hours. Now remember I told you this, Lol.

Ok so our Clique was 9 women deep and we hopped into 2 Uber cars! 4 in the Honda Civic and 5 in the BMW X5. Uh yes some of the ladies were lapped up in the backseat…just illegal, Lol. We weren’t going far, so we said a prayer and rolled out. 10 minutes later we were dropped off at the Metro station off Jefferson and La Cienega. Did I mention most of the ladies were already buzzin from the pre-party liquor and therefore the conversation on the train was loud & hilarious. We boarded the Metro Rail and headed to Universal City Walk to eat, drink and be merry.

Now the first train was a little slow and of course we stopped at every stop. Unfortunately, one of the ladies (who forgot to go to the bathroom before we left) had a little too much to drink and her bladder decided it no longer wanted to cooperate on this trip. There was no bathroom on the train or at any of the stops. We were almost forced to get creative…we had a plastic bag and some tissue and we were going to make it happen some way, some how, Lol. But once we got off the 1st train we knew we had to find a bathroom before we transferred to the 2nd train. Eventually we found a restaurant downtown that she potentially could have used but our time had expired THE bladder was about to burst and something had to be done. So we did what we do best...Improvised!
We were in Downtown LA and found a spot “in the cut” off a side street and my girl had to squat and make it happen. To give her what little privacy I could I had to squat down in front of her to camouflage her as much as possible so no one would see all her goodies. Of course, we had to have at least 1 guy passing by try and be nosey and actually attempt to see what we were doing. "Mind yo damn business" is what I wanted to yell but I couldn't get ghetto girl loud as it would bring more attention to us that what we already had! Thank goodness one of the other ladies I our crew came to the rescue and literally kicked at his ass to get him to keep it movin! The bladder was finally relieved and all was right with the world, lol. That shit was Hilarious! Of course, when we go back to meet the rest of the ladies at the restaurant they had access to the bathroom, Damn!! Really?? Don’t Judge Us!! (smile)

On to the 2nd train! This one was much quicker and as usual we had an audience enjoying our loud antics. Finally we made it to Universal Studios and were able to sit down and eat dinner at Camachos! The mexican food and my strawberry margarita was Delicious and well worth the wait!

Next Stop was the Saddle Ranch. No bull riding tonight, just music, more drinks and getting harassed by the extra friendly - drunk white guys! Ha! The one sitting at the bar by himself wanted to know everyone’s name and how we knew each other. His other 2 homeboys spoke to me and the drunk one wanted me to go outside and fight some random girl. Really?? I just got here and you already trying to get me caught up in some shit! I don’t even know you. His friend standing next to him told me to ignore his drunk friend and then explained that his boy called a girl out her name and she got mad at him and cursed him out, that shit was funny! Unfortunately, none of the guys were cute but they were cool and the conversation...or lack thereof...was interesting. A few drinks and a few R&B songs later it was time to go.

Sadly enough, once again...I didn't meet any potential dating candidates. But I'm glad I at least went out with the girls and had a good time! We may need to plan these at least once a month. You never know what shenanigans we may get into!

J. Cole Concert hit a Nerve!

Hey Beautiful People,

Finally I’m back to having A Life…it’s on a budget…but I do have a social life, LOL.
Unfortunately, I’ve been forced to get real creative in how I spend my money.

Lesson #1 - FYI -  changing from a County Job to a regular job is a BIG decision as it ultimately will affect your check immensely. What has baffled me is...now that I’m happy in my current position I’m forced to sacrifice financially. But when I was stressed the hell out, unhappy at my old job and complaining every day I was making a lot of money!! It’s funny how the world works. Would I change the decision I made NOT AT ALL!!! - I work a regular day shift and get home at a decent hour every night. I have my weekends to spend with my family and friends and I’m not worried about being blamed for a child dying on my caseload. I feel bad for my friends who are forced to continue working for the County but I say a prayer for them every night hoping they are able to find a way out. Okay enough about that depressing topic…lets talk about my Thursday Night Date with J. Cole, Lol.

So I started my weekend off by going to the J. Cole Concert - “Solo”
(by my damn self)
on Thursday Night, Oct., 24th
 @ Nokia Theater.

I originally thought I was going to the concert with a friend but he didn’t follow through on his end so I ended up going by myself.  If I want to go somewhere I will make it happen. I don’t have time for the Bullshit!

So you know attending this event was cause for a NEW outfit! So let me be clear…I’m not as young as I use to be. So my goal was to be cute and comfortable.  I knew them young girls would be running around the concert in stilettos. I was crazy enough to do the same thing “back in the day” when I was young but now I use my common sense, Lol.  I had an idea of what I wanted to wear but of course I didn’t have everything I needed in my closet.  As a result, I had several outfit changes and my twin sis Keesha can testify to this as it drove her crazy every time I tried to tell her what I was trying to do! She knows she’s my “go-to fashion consultant” so I don’t know why she was complaining as she knows this process is inevitable! Case in point – just last night we were working on putting together my outfit for a fundraising auction I’m going to next Friday and she was advising & complaining at the same time, LOL.

We finally settled on my Hip Hop Heavyweight T-shirt (Biggie and Tupac) East Coast meets the West Coast that I hadn’t worn in months because I needed shoes to go with it (just hanging in the closet, nwt - new with tags). I got lucky and found my red, white and black Jordan’s in the Slauson Swapmeet (don’t sleep that’s my low key go-to spot). I got my camouflage cargo pants from Old Navy but I had to settle for this choice as I didn’t know where to go to get a more “girlie” version to fit my curves! P.S. I’m still on the hunt for another pair!! Since my hair wasn’t done I had to throw in my oh so favorite ponytail and topped the outfit off with my red leather jacket. I think the outfit came together  real cool and I was good to go!!

Now, truth be told, I REALLY went to see Wale but he was only up there as an opening act and so his time was limited. I had a good time rockin out to some of his most popular hits but now I need him to have his own gig!! He start out at Club Nokia and I will be there!

Mr. Nice Watch - J Cole put on a good performance too. Naturally he gave us a little bit of his first album and then performed his radio hits from the second album like Power Trip and Crooked Smile but I think he’s become a little more “hood” then I remembered from the first album. I become somewhat annoyed if every other word you say is “nigga”. After the concert I wanted to write a post on Facebook because it bothered me but I didn't because I knew it was going to be difficult trying to explain my position without writing a book! So here it is -

My argument in a nutshell: I don’t mind anyone BLACK using the word “nigga” in their own personal circle of friends but what has become an issue for me is this new generation that uses it as if it is the only word in their vocabulary. If you as an artist say the word “nigga” in your songs on almost every song on the entire album and then your records (explicit version, of course) sells to the “mass majority” who do you think now believes they have the right to say the word??!! And it’s not just J. Cole, this includes popular artists like Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, and the new artist YG and his aptly titled song My Nigga! Really?? Don’t get me wrong… I understand that he’s trying to give love to his homeboys but did you have to release it as your next main stream single? In addition, you had the nerve to try and have a “clean version” called "My Hitta"!! This should have been released on an underground mix tape and stayed underground.

Oh this isn’t new…this has been an on-going debate within our society and now I understand why Oprah feels “no one” should use the word because look at what this has evolved into. Perfect example – the scene in the movie “White Girls” with the girls in the car singing Realest Nigga by Biggie Smalls feat. Eminem. The only difference is that, back then, they would say it when we weren’t around but now that’s no longer the case!! Some people of other races remain respectful and choose not to use the word but that is far and few between. All I’m saying is that if you hear anyone outside of the Black race (Latin, Asian, White) saying the word “nigga” in their conversation don’t get mad because our own black rap artists have basically given them a pass to say it. It's sad how the artists we have out now can no longer be viewed as a "role model" for this new generation growing up!

Well, that concludes me ranting on my soapbox...Just thought I'd get this off my chest!

Needless to say I still had fun at the concert and left “solo” just like I arrived, Lol. But, I’m glad I was able to get out and enjoy myself.
